Hello Friends,
Welcome to the first week of Gene’s Greens Spring CSA! Whether you’ve been with us for years or are joining our CSA for the very first time, we’re grateful to have you as part of our farm community.
Gene’s Choice membership slots have filled up, but for the first time, we’ve decided to make more room, adding ten spaces. All of the CSA info for the Spring can be found on our website here. The flower subscription begins in a few weeks, and slots are still available. We’ll keep it open until they run out.
Weekly bread subscribers: You may choose from the section under Victoria’s Bake Shop that says “Bread” or from The Breadery list. Breadery orders must be in by Monday at 5 pm, which is when we put our order in to them.
Bake Shop Goodies subscribers: Choose an item from Victoria’s Bake Shop under “Sweet Treats”. The items available for this subscription are highlighted in green.
Spring Special subscribers: Carrots Cakes are going out next week! Bunny cakes or Chocolate Swiss Rolls will go out the Week of April 12th.
Spring Flower subscribers: The first flower bouquets will be delivered the week of April 5th.
Honey subscribers: Your first pint of raw honey will go out next week. Let us know if you would like lanternfly honey instead.
Volunteer opportunities to help support the farm are opening up. This Friday is looking like a great day for outdoor projects and seedling work if you’d like to jump in. In exchange for four hours of work, you’ll receive a full box of food, eggs, bread, and any sweet treats we have available.
We’ll also soon be looking for delivery drivers for the CSA season. If you have availability most weeks throughout the season, this is a great way to get the most out of your time. Each delivery route takes about 2–3 hours, and you’ll still receive all the same benefits as volunteer field work: a full box of food (your choice), bread, and eggs. We’ll also provide gas money for your route.
One more opportunity we’re hoping to fill is picking flowers this summer. If you’re interested in starting a flower business or simply want to learn more about growing and arranging flowers, this is an amazing opportunity. We’ll need someone to come Tuesday or Friday mornings each week to harvest blooms. You’ll get all the flowers you can handle, plus produce, eggs, bread, and plants of your own. Along the way, you’ll learn about annuals, perennials, starting flowers from seed, succession planting, plant identification, and fall planting for spring harvest. It’s a great hands-on way to experience the flower side of the farm.
We’re incredibly thankful for each and every one of you, and we’re looking forward to a wonderful spring season together!
Here’s what we have for Gene’s Choice this week:
Apples Mix: A mix of juicy sour Granny Smith, super sweet Evercrisp, and Ludacrisp, which has the flavor of juicy fruit gum.
Brussels Sprouts: Nutty and slightly sweet, especially when roasted or sautéed until caramelized.
Baby Bella Mushrooms: Also known as cremini, these mushrooms have a rich, earthy flavor that’s great for sautés, pasta, and stir-fries.
Watermelon Radish: A mild radish with a crisp bite and beautiful pink center. Great sliced thin for salads or as a colorful garnish.
Kale: Hearty leafy green packed with flavor and nutrients, perfect for salads, sautés, soups, or smoothies.
Shallots: Mild and slightly sweet with a hint of garlic flavor. Excellent for dressings, sauces, and roasting.
Green Cabbage: Crisp and versatile with a mild sweetness, ideal for slaws, stir-fries, soups, or roasting.
We’ll be in our email taking new memberships and orders throughout the next few days. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help! For choose-your-own members and those just jumping in for this week, please have your order in by 5 pm Tuesday, and leave some extra choices, just in case.
